Michael was constantly in research mode; documenting the world around him as a way of investigating how others tackled issues and solved problems before him—museum installations, signage and packaging, urban design and architecture, you name it. If he saw a clever design solution out in the world, he took a photo to capture it.  Sand saw the world as inspiration and the medium of film as a cheap way to index it away for later use.

To our best knowledge, these series represent images meant to serve as research or inspiration in his work.

About the Archives

Michael Sand (1940-2013), was a prolific museum designer and educator who helped pioneer the use of hands-on and technology-driven practices in museums and other learning environments. The Michael Sand Archives contains thousands of Michael’s business and design documents, photographs, media, correspondence, and other material dating back to the early 1960s. The collection is a unique reflection of the collaborative and experimental nature of the design field, and the radical evolution of museum design in the twentieth century.
